I'd like suggestions of books –fiction or non-fiction– with protagonists that are autonomous and free and must adjust to (or find a way to withdraw from) an unfree world. Such as those who can make a separate peace, or otherwise disengage with the fallen, addictive, violent world around them, in order to live free, whether an actual hermit or just a reticent and quiet individual.

Some succeed, but sometimes such protagonists succeed for a time but eventually fail: such as in Vardis Fischer's novel, MOUNTAIN MAN, on which the 1972 Robert Redford JEREMIAH JOHNSON movie was based.

Not long ago I read Adrian Tchaikovsky's ONE DAY ALL THIS WILL BE YOURS, which was this kind of book, and funny too.

I'm about to read Tim Winton's THE SHEPHERD'S HUT which appears to be that kind of book.

I'd like to know about others.
