I have only recently started reading seriously, but I chose to read Dante Alighieri's Inferno despite it being a hard read for me. From what I understood, this version of Hell is divided in 3 parts representing the 3 types of sins according to Dante: incontinence (being unable to control primal urges), violence/beastiality, and fraud/malice. According to Dorothy L. Sayers (scholar): "Sinners punished for incontinence (also known as wantonness) – the lustful, the gluttonous, the hoarders and wasters, and the wrathful and sullen – all demonstrated weakness in controlling their appetites, desires, and natural urges".

This concept stuck with me and I would like to find novels that explore those themes. They don't need to have any link to religion, Christianity, or Hell.

Also, my repertoire is more than limited, so I cannot put any novels I've read to help pinpoint preferences, since I've yet to encounter something I disliked. Thank you for your help.

I’m remembering some side characters from *Jane Eyre* maybe being examples of that. I need to read it again, I think it was very much a virtue-and-sin themed book.
