I would prefer a nonfiction version. I would like if it were well written and not pulling any punches. And I would like to cover the length of their journey from the beginning all the way through until their fateful end in northern California when the ultimate disaster and their story Took place.

I don’t mind a fictional retelling, but I would prefer to avoid personalized melodrama, and I’m interested in the genuine hardships that they underwent and their efforts to move across the country. I understand that there were cattle thieves, clashes with the natives, thieves, and killers that were a part of their own party, not to mention The clash between party members at the end of the line in northern California when one group would not share their food with another group while that other group starved and resorted to cannibalism. And how someone managed to reach a town in California and gather gather a parted go up there and help rescue these people. What I mentioned is pretty much all I know bullet point but I am looking for something that will do a better job explaining the timeline and maybe the people involved, etc.

I know that a lot has been written about the story in years and decades past, I just don’t know where to start on reading this, which is why I come here to get a suggestion for a title that is well written, and not simply a tabloid type affair. Thank you everyone for your help , have a great day.

    1. *Desperate Passage* by Ethan Rarick is wonderfully written, and uses info from the most recent archeological finds, letters and diaries. It’s not entirely chronological, but that shouldn’t be a problem if you’re already familiar with the overall story.
