I grew up reading everything I could. Then I went through a major depressive episode and never picked it up again. My attention has suffered. Vocabulary, writing, speaking. I get words mixed up constantly or can never find the one I need. It’s holding me back at work.
I want to start practicing these skills again and it starts with reading. Not just online articles but longform intelligent books. But I don’t know where to start or what I like anymore.
I do know that I love all kinds stories and worldbuilding. My favorite movies are thrillers and noirs. Growing up I read a lot of Stephen King and Edgar Allen Poe. In college I read most of Shakespeare (with help from a professor). Hamlet and the Tempest were my favorites. I also like non-fiction history, provided it’s not written like a text book. What I don’t like is non-linear or abstract stories and I’m not looking for poetry or self help.
Any recommendations for smart, well written books to help me find the love again?
