Any books with an ugly protagonist?

I did a search for near that exact term and I'm only getting results from a decade ago! But I'm sure more stories like this exist.

And sure physically "ugly" is what I'm looking for, but if the term can be applied to ones emotional or in a sense spiritual state that would work as well.

Classics like The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Quasimodo, are already accounted for, but to me that's practically a "gentle giant" type story. And for that matter the antagonists are so blatantly hateful there's no room for nuance. Good story though.

The Blade Itself has nearly what I'm looking for as the "ugly" parts about the characters are intrinsic to their outward personalities but has little bearing on their core beliefs…
but to be honest not quite in the mood for that kind of writing. Though I love me a good book with struggle and magic.

Honestly I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Which is why I'm here!
