Hey r/booksuggestions, don’t hate me, but I can’t remember the last time I picked up a read a book for fun. But I want to change that! Lately I have a bit more free time than I am used to. I have had a yearning to get back into reading, but don’t know where to start. There’s just SO many options.

I know what I like though. I am a huge fan of science fiction. Aliens, exploration, and horror are big hooks for me. I also really enjoy deep character development and getting to know small details about them.

I guess since I’m trying to get back into this, I’m looking for something that isn’t too difficult of a read. If that makes sense. I also think it would be really cool to start reading from more female authors. Pretty much everything I can remember reading in the past was from a male author and I think i would appreciate the variety.

Thank you for the help! I can’t wait to hit the bookstore and pick up some of your suggestions.

    1. Short stories. If you are a non-reader you are going to want to break it down into easy peices. I recommend New Suns and New Suns II edited by Nisi Shawi.

Murderbot Diaries series by Martha Wells, book one is All Systems Red.

It’s a bit of a cliche at this point because it’s been recommended so often in this subreddit, but it is one of those series that are perfect for people who wanna get into reading sci-fi. It’s about a cyborg who would rather just watch TV and figure out the meaning of life instead of doing its job.

The books are mostly short, fast paced, and there’s nothing too complicated, with a likeable main character too. There are aliens and exploration, but not too much horror, and lots of character developments for the main character.

The Bobiverse series or the Murderbot diaries might hold your interest and are very easy/approachable. Both focus a lot on the inner world of the main character and their feelings about being different from humans. If you enjoyed the movie “The Martian” you might check out some of Andy Weir’s other work (it was a pretty good adaptation, so for the sake of variety I would recommend branching out) like Project Hail Mary.

Andy Weir’s stories, The Martian and Project Hail Mary are both excellent books for the non-sci-fi reader.

    5. Classic science fiction is a little more effort to read but you can get so much more out of it. If you haven’t read the original “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley it’s a super interesting read since it kinda kicked off the genre altogether.

As another I’m rereading “Solaris” by Lem atm and it’s got this version of horror that’s weird in a way I can’t quite put my finger on…

    6. Try out the Galactic Football League series (the first book is The Rookie). Tons of fast paced action, both at a surface level and seeing the wheels get set in motion for later events. Creative aliens, different planets, and orbital stations throughout the series.
