I quite enjoyed Faulkner's As I Lay Dying and especially Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath, books that are quite different from each other but also have certain similarities; Both are about families dealing with difficulties (poverty, death). I call them socially realistic but I guess I could call them humanistic too. Both involve travel or migration, which is also something that I enjoyed.
