Books like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly?

I'm not necessarily looking for westerns or war stories. Mainly, I really dig how The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly has this sprawling, epic feel to it. A couple of characters with their own goals interacting with something much bigger than themselves but not really getting involved (in the case, the American Civil War).

I guess what I'm looking for is a small story with a bigger story going on in the periphery, if that makes sense? I'm open to any genre but prefer historical fiction
