I am under the weather and could use some book recommendations if you have the time. First time Reddit poster. I don’t know how to describe my tastes per se; I enjoy the classics of American literature, I like fantasy but a lot of authors don’t catch me(nothing ever as good as Rothfuss and Martin), adventure, coming of age stories(when I was younger), Russian novels(have Dostoyevsky on the shelf but it can be a slog with the dark tones), historical fiction and history.
Generally enjoy different genres. Not especially interested in horror or romance. Authors listed below I have generally read some/more of their books as well.

For reference here are my favorite books:

    1. Name of the Wind and The Wise Man’s Fear, Patrick Rothfuss(Honestly the best writing I have ever found, revamped my love for reading, chasing the feeling ever since)
    2. Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden and Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck
    3. This House of Sky, Ivan Doig
    4. Flowers for Algernon, Daniel Keyes
    5. 1984 and Animal Farm, George Orwell
    6. To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee
    7. Mockingbird, Walter Tevis(I have read all of his books except Queen’s Gambit)
    8. The Outsiders, SE Hinton(read all of her books as a teenager)
    9. War and Peace, Leo Tolstoy(favorite Russian novel)
    10. Doctor Zhivago, Boris Pasternak
    11. Game of Thrones series
    12. Princess Bride, S Morgenstern
    13. The Body and Shawshank Redemption, Steven King.
    14. Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson

Honorable mentions: Tis, The Metamorphosis, The Color Purple, Mark Twain, Uncle Tom’s Cabin and the Harry Potter series.

    1. This might be off base but I feel compelled to recommend The Reformatory by Tananarive Due. Here is a little snippet of the synopsis:

A gripping, page-turning novel set in Jim Crow Florida that follows Robert Stephens Jr. as he’s sent to a segregated reform school that is a chamber of terrors where he sees the horrors of racism and injustice, for the living, and the dead.

It’s a historical fiction with paranormal and thriller elements. It might intrigue you!
