Comedy: Simon Sort of Says by Erin Bow – it’s a middle grade comedy, but about some pretty serious (age-appropriate) subject matter.
Lighthearted: The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill (middle grade – I remember it being pretty lighthearted, at least.)
Lighthearted: Moomin series by Tove Jansson. Classic fantasy children’s series, there’s also a couple of animated adaptions if you want something to watch in addition to reading.
Lighthearted comedy: Tales from the Five Kingdoms series by Vivian French – the first book is The Robe of Skulls. A middle grade comedy/fantasy series based around fairytale and fantasy tropes.
Of these, I think Moomin and Tales from the Five Kingdoms might be the best to start, especially since they both have multiple volumes and thus can be long-term distractions 😛
