I like the idea of cozy mysteries but when I've tried to read that genre I find them too hokey. I like a lot of atmosphere; the feeling of reading a book in front of a fire in a log cabin while a winter storm rages outside. I like Louise Penny's books that strike a decent balance between dark and cozy. Looking for recommendations in that vein. Thank you!

    1. Try the Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries by Dorothy L. Sayers. They were written in the 1920s and 1930s but are still classics today and several of them are free on Project Gutenberg Canada. I’d say the most atmospheric one is The Nine Tailors. It’s one of the middle books but you don’t have to have read any of the others to enjoy it.

    2. Anne Cleeves novel Raven’s Black (first in a series). She does a great job describing the Shetland Islands off of the coast of Scotland. The atmospheric, almost bleak, descriptions of the island complement the mystery and characters. I enjoyed it (and the series) very much. You might also like to try her Vera Stanhope series (The Crow Trap is the first book), again the same vibe and great read.

    3. You might try the golden spoon by Jessa Maxwell. Kind of cozy vibes with a bit of Lucy Foley/Ruth ware vibes.
