I'm looking for examples of stories that set your teeth on edge with how tense they are. My plan is to study them in order to discuss how the writer achieved such tension.
I've got a few such as Algernon Blackwood's 'A Haunted Island'. Doesn't have to be horror, either. Just choke full of tension and / or suspense.
Only looking for short stories, so no novels or novellas, please.
