I’m not sure if this exists, or if I’ll explain it well, but I’ll give it a try.

I’d like to read a fantasy novel that is not centered around a war, an evil wizard, a quest, etc., but is rather fantasy because of the setting and types of beings that exist. The focus would be on the relationships and interactions of the characters living in this world, rather than on resolving some kind of problem. High on aesthetics, but low on adventuring.

This being the case, I’m not interested in a modern “comfy”, Legends and Lattes kind of story, or in reading some young adult/teen fantasy romance thing. In fact, I’d prefer the focus not be on romance at all, though I don’t mind the presence of it.

I feel like it used to be common in old works of fiction to not really have the traditional rise in tension, or “conflict”, but there would just be a chronicle of the lives of people in a place and how they interacted with another. Friendships, loves, hatreds, people would come and go, and that was the story. I’d like that, except in a fantasy setting, basically. A bird’s eye view in to the lives of people living in the golden age of a high fantasy world.

Is there any such thing? Someone must have broached this before? Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks!
