Could someone please explain the allure of Atonement by Ian McEwan? I just finished this book and I cannot see why everyone was so excited by it. I found the storyline sparse and the flow extremely slow. The characters were also extremely shallow.
I understand McEwan is an accomplished writer but what am I missing here? As a reference it took me 3 weeks to get through Atonement. This evening I started reading Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle and I’m already 1/4 of the way through and throughly impressed by Sinclair’s writing and storytelling.
Please tell me what I’m missing? And are there any other books by McEwan that I should read to change my mind?
