Favorite writers are Don DeLillo and Haruki Murakami. I’ve enjoyed Pynchon, but looking for something a bit more accessible. Already read DFW, no need to go back.
I’ve also been a fan of magical realism — think Marquez, Bulgakov, Lethem. Enjoyed a few alternate histories — Spufford and Chabon come to mind. I’ve enjoyed some horror — Shirley Jackson, Stephen King, Mark Z. Danielewsky. I’ve also enjoyed quite a few ‘randoms’ — Burroughs, Chandler, Colson Whitehead, James Ellroy, Donna Tartt, David Mitchell, Gary Shteyngart, and plenty of others.
I have a high bar for quality and writing style, as I’ve spent time with the Russians. No fantasy please. Sci-fi is okay as long as the emphasis is on the characters and the story, and not how the ship works. Contemporary authors are preferred, although I love the classics so no need to shy away from them.
