So im more of the style of reading classics and philosophy, but I do also enjoy some contemporary stuff too.

But I was wondering if anyone has book recommendations for 20th century modern classics, I've read a few like Perfume, The Sheltering Sky, Rebecca and The Quiet American, so anything along those lines would be great!

I don't have a particular genre preference, as long as it has compelling character elements and is fairly reflective.

Also i haven't read Agatha Christie but she was highly recommended, does anyone know which of her books would be great to start with to get into her? (other than her, as many suggestions as you feel like!)

[East of Eden](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4406.East_of_Eden) by John Steinbeck.

I would start with something such as [And Then There Were None](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16299.And_Then_There_Were_None) or [Death on the Nile](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/131359.Death_on_the_Nile). I started with the first Miss Marple. It was fine. But if you want to get a feel for whether you’re going to enjoy the books and the characters, maybe best start with stuff she wrote when she was on top form.

Possibly ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ by Marquez . It’s a modern classic, don’t know how reflective it is, but surely quite original and authentic.
