Does anyone know of a book that involves the topic of another animal gaining intelligence like our own, and the complexities of 2 different intelligent species sharing a planet?
Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Not what you’re looking for, but it turns out that the dolphins are more intelligent than they let on. And they’re grateful, which is nice.

If you’re willing to accept any planet instead of Earth, then “Children of Time”
“Breakthrough” by Michael C. Grumley has humans finding out dolphins can talk and interact. These dolphins play a part but its not focused around them

The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham. It’s never completely explained where the intelligent triffids come from, but the theme is what you’re requesting.

A few Adrian Tchaikovsky books might be close, not all take place in earth. He has some short books,
-Saturation Point, is a book about a eco zone gone wrong on Earth and it becomes inhabited by green men.
-Walking to Alderbaran, is a book about a gateway object found in space that is a path to other worlds with other species using the gateway encountered.
