Historically, I’m a big fantasy reader but it became apparent to me that I needed a break when The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by S. A. Chakraborty just didn’t captivate me. I knew it was a phenomenal read, it just didn’t sink its teeth into me.
I changed course and read Lady Tan's Circle of Women by Lisa See and Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I thoroughly enjoyed both and am looking for other novels maybe not similar to these but like them in that they capture the essence of a place or time outside of modern day USA.
