I’ve never read anything by Jane Austen or the Brontë sisters and I’m wondering which book I should start with. Open to suggestions from other similar authors as well.
Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice are the best-known books, so if you want to know what people are talking about when they talk about Austen and the Brontes, they should be your first port of call. The next best-known Bronte book is wuthering heights by emily bronte. Anne’s best book is the tenant of wildfell hall, and charlotte’s other great book is villette. For austen, your best next step would be to find out a bit more about each and decide which character type intrested you most. The brontes have much more wildness and darkness in their books, while austen is calm and civilised and much funnier, though the brontes aren’t without dark humour.
Other good 19th century books to start with would be Middlemarch by George Eliot, The Woman in white by Wilkie Collins, and something by Charles Dickens.
