I just recently got into reading my favourite books from my childhood, by Paul jennings.
All short stories that start with a normal child, with normal child problems, but then something strange happens. For example, they find a remote control that they can use to pause/fast forward people and animals, or they see their own face in the wallpaper and it’s starts communicating with them, or they find a pair of trousers that can make them run really fast.
I find it really hard to connect with science fiction stories about scientists/astronauts/complete fantasy worlds etc, but I like stories about very normal people that have something strange and fantastical to happen to them. Maybe something they have to keep a secret.
I am an adult now, so I want to read something that will help expand my vocabulary, but I don’t know where to look! I’m not a big reader. Any help would be appreciated. Short story collections are good too. Thanks!

Side note: I do like Stephen King’s stories but he does seem to bang on a bit about backstories of people who are seemingly irrelevant to the story. No offence if you’re really into him, there might be something that is going over my head.
*Looking for Jake* by China Mieville
Exhalation by Ted Chiang
Drunk on all your strange new words is about a woman that’s a translator for an alien ambassador and has to solve his mysterious death. This was such a fun and unique story and I never see anyone talk about it. Other than the alien par, shes just a recent college grad working her first adult job.
