The last two years I’ve been reading a lot of of fantasy and science fiction. They are by far my top genre, combined accounting for over a third of all I’ve read. I love it, mostly, but I’m also looking for more different books.
I’m not the biggest fan of slow, reflective, meandering stories, but I adore books that are raw and sincere and personal and which you can get completely engrossed in. I’m fine with mild fantastical elements (like magical realism or supernatural elements in a real world setting). Aside from this I read mostly romance, some thrillers, or historical books. I’d love to branch out though.
It’s a major plus for me if the book deals with messy identity questions, in your early 20s to mid 30s. Also great if the book is a bit of a tearjerker, but I’m not super cool with misery porn. More bittersweet than sad or miserable. Cool with well-written sex, less cool with explicit gore or body horror. Also tend to stay away from explicit sexual assault (it’s fine if it happens off-page or very briefly with no details).
