My favorite cozy mystery series is the Gideon Oliver series by Aaron Elkins. The second book is called The Dark Place and follows Gideon Oliver, a forensic anthropologist and “Skeleton Detective” who is solving an old urban legend type mystery in the PNW. It introduces series regulars like his friend who is in the FBI and a forest ranger who he has a slow burn romance with. However, the romance definitely isn’t the main plot of the story and is fade-to-black.
I recommend this series to everyone; it’s so good if you love thriller mysteries that aren’t the unsettling true-crime type. Many favorites in the series are reminiscent of Agatha Christie and movies like Clue. Every book also visits an interesting locale with cuisine and culture playing major themes throughout. They can be read as standalones but it helps to know familiar characters if you read from at least book 2 on; I think there are about 20 altogether.
