Not elaborate fiction mermaid stories, but a proper book and not an information book. I want to start reading and I think a book about the ocean/ ocean creatures like whales, dolphins, turtles will do the trick, but still telling a story? If that makes sense!

The Old Man and the Sea or Moby Dick?
Are you looking for fiction or nonfiction? Some academic trade books or narrative nonfiction books tell frame/structure their subjects as stories. Or do you just want literary fiction that is set on/in the ocean or follows an ocean creature(s)?
Peter Benchley writes fiction books about the ocean. Jaws is his most well known work but he’s written several other books set in the ocean.
Or are you looking for non fiction only?

I was never interested in this book but have slowly worked my way through and now enjoying the voyage with the crew.
Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant is a horror story about mermaids in the sea.
