I’m looking for novels, especially current ones that explore themes/motifs of spiritual transcendence in a non-religious way. A bonus if it is a novel that could be potentially taught as a text in school.
Question reminds me of Hermann Hesse, though possibly too much Buddhism in his books.

For a book that is slightly less transcending spiritually but rather transcending as a human race (evolving and what have you) I would suggest Arthur C. Clarke’s Childhood’s End. It’s a short sci-fi read well worth your time.
