Recently I have read Dune and then the His Dark Materials series and absolutely loved both. Looking forward to some similar type of stuff that has the following traits that I found to be present in both series:
-deep and believable world building
-complex characters with complex but followable motives
-gripping sense of grand adventure
-big themes that reflect on our humanity/society (religion, morality, power, search for meaning, etc)
-when I read both of these I felt like I was reading something important and groundbreaking
Any recs that aren’t necessarily sci fi / fantasy are welcome as long as they hit some of the above. Really just looking for something gripping that makes me think “wow this author is a genius, and I can’t put this down”

Patricia McKillip: Riddlemaster trilogy
And actually, Harry Potter fits your requirements perfectly.
Children of Ruin by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Scifi about a last ditch effort to save the species. Very well written and unique
