The title is probably an exaggeration but I genuinely don't remember a time where I sat down and read a fiction chapter book since I read Matilda at about nine, for reference I am now 20. I've read from textbooks for school, I read comics, and I read some other non-fiction stuff, but I don't read novels and I'd like to change that because I feel like it'll help my brain not be so lazy.

Issue is, I haven't got a clue where I'd like to start reading so I thought I'd take to Reddit. Any genre, any length, anything. If there's a book that you think I have to read before I die, please tell me about it and I'll put it on the list.

My uncle recommended Infinite Jest to me a while back so my ultimate goal is to look at the copy he gave me and not think, "Oh fuck, how am I gonna read that?"

Difficult question without knowing your taste. Maybe a good way getting into reading is to find a movie or series that you like that is based on a book. The chances are that if you like the movie or series, you might enjoy the book, and you can start to experience how the book experience.can enhance a story (especially because movies have to cut and change so much that it is regularly a reduction of the story).

I spent my entire childhood and teenage years reading and writing until I had a huge gap due to work and life struggle, it’s been 9 years for me so I can relate how hard it is to start reading again, And finding a genre to pull you. But remember reading is an escapism from reality for most people, try starting with unfamiliar stories. It will get you curious enough to actually finish them.
I’ve read 28 novels so far (it took me about 6 month) and I’ve recently started writing a novel (uploaded three chapters so far). So you’ll find your way too.
The important thing is to take it slow, experiment with different genres and allow yourself to dive into an immersive universe 🖤
A side note: I used to be a huge fan of fantasy and it turns out I still do, but I found lots of enthusiasm when reading dark romance which I didn’t think I would love but ended up obsessed 😅
