I am looking for a series similar to LOTR but darker with characters morally ambiguous. Something like the Malazan series seems perfect but I am not a strong reader and those seem… intimidating to day the least.
You could try the First Law series. It’s a good bit darker and more gritty than LOTR without being a true grimdark book. It’s also generally ranked among the top 5 series of all time over on r/fantasy. Audiobook is also excellent if you prefer those.
Anne Rice: “The Vampire Chronicles.” The series began with “Interview with the Vampire” and includes multiple novels following the lives and stories of various vampire characters. All dark and definitely morally ambiguous
1. Interview with the Vampire (series now on Netflix)
2. The Vampire Lestat
3. The Queen of the Damned
4. The Tale of the Body Thief
5. Memnoch the Devil
6. The Vampire Armand
7. The Witching Hour () – Begins “The Lives of the Mayfair Witches” (now on Netflix) series, which intersects with “The Vampire Chronicles.”
