My book group is half male, half female, middle aged, uniformly politically progressive, and well-educated. I personally mostly read for the feeling of the book and not to be "intellectually challenged," so I pick mostly fiction, and I lean toward books that make me feel good or at least feel something, like The Midnight Library, Remarkably Bright Creatures, The Book Thief, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, and Lessons in Chemistry. I like coming of age tales, usually books written by women, books with some fantasy elements, mental health themes and/or magical realism. Whose got some on-the-mark recommendations for me?

A little different than what you’re pinpointing, but Beartown by Fredrik Backman feels like it was made for bok club discussions.
We Ride Upon Sticks
Kitchens of the Great Midwest
The Round House
The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell
Lone Women by Victor Lavalle. It’s about a black woman who moves to Montana to escape something…and she has a secret in her trunk. It’s technically horror but it’s ultimately about sisterhood and community.
