I have 6yo twin nephews. They are identical. Their parents did not give them matching names, don't dress them alike (other than professional family photos and Christmas jammies that also match the rest of the family), etc… In kindergarten, they had to be in the same class. This year, they were able to be split up. They have the same interests and participate in the same activities just by virtue of living in a smaller town and being young enough that all the kids are in the same T-ball, soccer, summer swimming lessons, etc… But they do gravitate towards different positions and favorite characters no problem.
All that to say, they are okay with and already being encouraged to be individuals, not just "the twins". This school year was kind of a test to make sure they were okay being separated. They are loving it so far.
I'd like to add to the encouragement of being themselves as they get older. Can anyone recommend any children's books that have twins who recognize and celebrate their differences while still being friends and close siblings? The only ones I can think of are Sweet Valley High. But obviously younger and not as soap-opera-y. 🙂
Even if you have recommendations for older-than -6yo, I'll take them now to bank for future gifts. TIA!
