Without gods as characters? Or without characters that believe in gods?

Try “The Beyonders” trilogy. One of my all-time favourite because:
* The antagonist is not overpowered
* The main character is a normal human, all the way to the very end, no hidden “generational talent” or sudden awakening of power, etc.
* The characters are not dumb, they all act reasonably
* The interactions between characters and event that are not that relevant to the overarching plot is still enjoyable
Overall it is a relatively easier read and the plot is quite simplistic. However, there is something about the way it is written that makes me return to read it again and again over time.

The Folk of Air series is a good start. I personally don’t like fantasy xD but it’s a decent read for a beginner.

Terry Brooks , Shanarra series . Amber Series , Roger Zelazny.

Riyria Revelations series by Michael J Sullivan is very minimal on religion similar to LOTR. The world itself is very Tolkien inspired but the characters are fantastic!

Religion is pretty limited in Tales of the Otori by Lian Hearn.

This is not classic/high/real fantasy – more like fantasy-adjacent but recommending because it’s a great book & a blast to read, and no god or religion.
The Sharing Knife series by Lois Macmaster Bujold.

The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb has very little religion.
The Cradle series by Will Wight

Stay away from Sanderson. Almost every character has been or is or has become a god or god adjacent.

We hunt the flame and its sequel, we free the stars! It’s one of my favorite fantasy duos and it’s absolutely beautiful. It’s based on ancient Arab culture and there’s a romance subplot as well.

The hard sci-fi genre can have these kinds of elements. Usually it is aliens though. 🤷
