Try “The Beyonders” trilogy. One of my all-time favourite because:

      * The antagonist is not overpowered
      * The main character is a normal human, all the way to the very end, no hidden “generational talent” or sudden awakening of power, etc.
      * The characters are not dumb, they all act reasonably
      * The interactions between characters and event that are not that relevant to the overarching plot is still enjoyable

Overall it is a relatively easier read and the plot is quite simplistic. However, there is something about the way it is written that makes me return to read it again and again over time.

    2. The Folk of Air series is a good start. I personally don’t like fantasy xD but it’s a decent read for a beginner.

    3. Riyria Revelations series by Michael J Sullivan is very minimal on religion similar to LOTR. The world itself is very Tolkien inspired but the characters are fantastic!

Stay away from Sanderson. Almost every character has been or is or has become a god or god adjacent.

    5. We hunt the flame and its sequel, we free the stars! It’s one of my favorite fantasy duos and it’s absolutely beautiful. It’s based on ancient Arab culture and there’s a romance subplot as well.

The hard sci-fi genre can have these kinds of elements. Usually it is aliens though. 🤷
