I read The Buried Giant and really loved it. Then I read Never Let Me Go expecting to enjoy it as well but unfortunately did not. I found it very dull and didn't like the characters enough to be invested. But I find myself thinking about it. He has a writing style that describes things very specifically, and it is oddly soothing. I think why I enjoyed one book and not the other is just that its subject matter was more interesting to me. I may be biased towards fantasy, and also books where things happen.

Anyways I am wondering if it would be worth it to try reading one of his other books. Or if anyone has recommendations for books with this writing style that is very specific and deliberate.

    1. Remains of the day is still my favourite book I’ve read. I think it’s his magnum opus despite the internet leaning to never let me go in terms of suggestions, the characters just aren’t as intriguing to me. Ishiguros unreliable narrator is utilised the best here, the butler Steven’s narration oozes with personality, being super formal while still being hilarious at times. It’s also super fun to digest and has lots to think about. Themes of where our loyalties lie and where they ends, obsession with professionalism leading to lost opportunities. It’s an extremely unique novel with poignant themes with tons of character. The plot isn’t particularly dynamic, but if you loved the buried giant I don’t see how that will be a problem.
