Intelligent contrarian, or outsider books?

I'm always energized when I watch podcasts with people who think differently from everyone else. Often these people are controversial. They often also hold particular opinions for the shock value, and I'm okay with that too, but I'm more so looking for an author who isn't JUST looking to shock, but also has some original ideas. Fiction or nonfiction is okay, so either the author or the main character can be a contrarian. Not political please, social commentary is ok.
