I’m shopping for my 25 year old brother, who loves books and comics, but he can be really hard to shop for! I’m looking for sci fi and fantasy mainly, but other genres are ok. He enjoys comics with leftist politics, fleshed out characters, interesting concepts, and diverse representation.
Some favorite comics that he’s read so far are:
The Woods by James Tynion IV
Sweet Tooth by Jeff Lemire
Saga by Brian K Vaughan
Coda by Simon Spurrier
Delicious In Dungeon/Dungeon Meshi by Ryoko Kui
Some favorite books that he’s read so far are:
Piranesi by Susanna Clarke
The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North
A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers
Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie

Parable of the Sower / Parable of the Talents – Octavia Butler
Underground Railroad – Colson Whitehead
Severance – Ling Ma
Maybe something like The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories by Ken Liu? It’s a collection of short stories, with ventures into speculative fiction and magical realism but based around Chinese and more broader East Asian history. Really thought-provoking and beautifully written, feels like it might tick quite a few of the boxes?
Death: The High Cost of Living
by Neil Gaiman
The Tower
by François Schuiten
and
Benoît Peeters
Their “The Obscure Cities” Series has gotten some English translations recently and although some stories within the series are a bit hit or miss, the art is truly fantastic.
