Hi all! I want to help my hubby find a book for his girls.
The oldest is 12. She recently told us she feels as if Harry Potter is too kid ish. She used to be OBSESSED. Still is but doesn’t want to admit it, lol. She is enjoying the chronicles of Narnia. Any recommendations?
Also has a 10 year old. I’m not sure what her interest are, not into reading as much as her sister. Maybe something to intrigue her?

if it’s generally fantasy she likes, I would suggest fablehaven (brandon mull), the “dealing with dragons” series (patricia c wrede), or books by tamora pierce (start with the song of the lioness)! if it’s specifically magic/magicians, maybe the alchemyst series by michael scott—I remember liking those around that age.

if she’s willing to move beyond fantasy, my little sister is 14 and she’s really into the “my lady jane” book series. it’s historical fiction, so it might feel more “grown up,” but it’s written in a fun and accessible way for younger readers. percy jackson is also a great option for that age, and there’s a LOT of books so it should keep her busy for a while.

for the younger one, it would be helpful to know what other things she likes! I liked the fairyland series by catherynne m valente when I was about that age, but I read a lot back then and if she doesn’t then she might find it a bit dense. you could try mystery books—maybe the wollstonecraft detective agency?

For the 10 year old who is not hugely into reading, the Ben Hatke graphic novels Zita the Spacegirl and Mighty Jack might be big hits. They are sophisticated and smart but also fun, zippy reads.
