I used to have this rule for myself where I only annotate books on my second read (in case I don’t like the book on my first read and want to donate it after and so I have a more educated perspective on the themes and plot for my annotations on my second read) But I’m starting a new wave of books I’ve never read before and I know I’m going to miss annotating so I do intend on annotating these books after I get a little bit of a feel for them but I don’t know how to figure out themes and characters to label my tabs to (I usually write a lot in the margins, circle and underline text and then go back after a few chapters and add color coded tabs to each annotation I write. I tend to keep my tab colors and key unique to the themes, characters, and motifs/symbolism in each book so I think this is why I’m struggling so much) I hope this makes sense, some guidance would really be appreciated! Feel free to ask any clarification questions!

I’ve never heard of this. If it’s okay to ask, why do you do this?

Uhhh…
Annotating improves/ augments understanding and appreciating for some. Depending on the book, if I don’t write as well as read, the experience is too cursory. So I’m just saying I don’t think it’s unusual to annotate heavily. But first versus second read – I don’t wait. If I want/ need to do it, I do it.
