    Hi,
I'm looking for a book to read aloud to my 14 and 10yo daughters. We read a lot and I'm just not sure where to go because most of what I'm thinking won't work rn (Pride and Prejudice) and I'm hoping someone suggests a book I've maybe forgotten about that would be great. The more suggestions the better really. We just finished The Giver, Ender's Game, and And Then There Were None this summer and that was all I prepared. We've already read the usual stuff: Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Hunger Games, The Hobbit, The Golden Compass, etc. I'm trying to move away from middle grade entirely as a genre because my older one is more engaged with a more complex story. I also don't want to do traditional high school classics.
My youngest wants fantasy, and I think Ender's Game was probably their most recent favorite, so I'm looking for something less cozy with some political intrigue. I'm honestly considering some Brandon Sanderson, but I'm not a huge fan. I'm literally also considering Twilight – but know there's something better out there, I just need some recommendations. Romantic elements are also okay. What do you think?

    1. I really loved the Matched series by Ally Condie!

I read it for the first time when I was 12 but now even at 24 it’s my most reread series and I still love it to bits lol.

    2. Hmm

      I would recommend the following:

**The Seer and the Sword** by Victoria Hanley

**The Blue Sword** by Robin McKinley (there is a companion book that comes first timeline wise called **The Hero and the Crown** but I preferred TBS, and it can be read by itself)

**The Neverending Story** by Michael Ende

**To Say Nothing of the Dog** by Connie Willis

**The Princess Bride** by William Goldman

Maybe Tamora Pierce? I like both her series but I’d probably start with Alanna. Usually her books start out with main characters around age ten and follow them until they reach adulthood, so they get darker as they go.

I also liked Deeplight by Francis Hardinge, which is labeled a children’s book but has some pretty dark content including an abusive friendship, but I thought it was well-done.

Also maybe Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith which is a fantasy with good political intrigue and some light romance.
