I just finished reading Breasts and Eggs by Mieko Kawakami and I'm so shook. It's basically a no plot, just vibes book that follows a single woman through her life and her relationship with her sister, her niece and the other women in her life. She is single and childless and spends most of the time alone. Soon, she begins to desire a child, the book follows her experience and conversations with people as she considers what it means to have a child of her own.
This is a book that i was glad to read as someone who is considering a child-free life. It's such an in-depth take on what it means to have children and how much goes into it. The protagonist's inner debate with herself about what it will mean to have children on her own, her conversations with other mothers, and her relationship with her niece all connect to create this well-rounded narrative about womanhood and motherhood.
The book is boring. The prose goes on and on and to be frank, not much happens in the book in the middle pages. But I couldn't stop reading because I had entered the mind of the main character. I felt like I could relate to her struggles, wants and desires. As well as the struggles of women in Japan and all over the world. I feel like this is one of the few books that truly get into the nitty-gritty of womanhood from so many angles. It's definitely one of the best books I've read this year.
