I loved the novel Push and was excited to find out Sapphire had made a sequel about Precious’ son. But after finishing it it just seemed a bit… underwhelming.

I feel like there was no real growth from Abdul. Ever since arriving at the catholic school he’s been a rapist with murderous ideology and never lost that mentality or even meaningfully confronted it.

And he accepts nothing about his life. As far as I can tell, he still claims his father died in “the war” and his mom died of an accident. He never truly learned that his dad is also his grandfather, and his sister was entirely absent.

I don’t want to make it seem like I wanted this book to be a Greatest Hits album of Push, where Blue Rain swoops in and heals Abdul. But it just felt like Sapphire wanted to only focus on Abdul’s “new” trauma instead of dealing with the plot lines that already existed for him.

But I fully acknowledge that I may be missing something so I would love to hear your thoughts on the book!
