Hi all, I’m thinking of getting my dad (56year old British) a book for a gift. However, my dad doesn’t read books at all. It’s not that he can’t/struggles, I just don’t think he’s ever really found a book. He’s quite into football, music, horror, but recommendations don’t have to be limited to those, I know it’s abit vague but any good suggestions?

Can I ask what is driving you to buy him a gift he seems unlikely to enjoy? If he hasn’t expressed a desire to start reading as a hobby, I personally would gift him something more in tune with his interests.

If I’ve misunderstood your post, and you are saying he is trying to develop the hobby but hasn’t found an enjoyable book, I would look at, for example, his favorite athlete and look for a biography. There are uncountable biographies out in the world and it’s a genre I came to later in my life; I really enjoy them. Actors, politicians, musicians, chefs, athletes-everyone has one, LOL!

One book that I found so interesting is In the Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick. It’s the true story of a whaling ship that was attacked by a whale, and the story upon which it’s believed Moby Dick is based.

There’s a horror lit sub (I apparently can’t write it out, LOL) to look for titles in that category as well. I’m a big Stephen King fan, but the genre is huge beyond him, of course. Haven’t read much good horror myself recently, so I don’t have specific recs.

I’m not familiar enough with the author to suggest a specific book, but maybe Stephen King?

    3. Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand. It’s about a group of 70’s rock stars that decide to record their album in an estate that has a haunted history. It’s short but intriguing.

    4. I’m confused as to why you would want to buy someone a gift that probably won’t make them happy, but in some strange way, it’ll make you happy?

I’m not having a dig at you, it just kinda says ‘no’ from beginning to end
