Here's the kicker: I don't like stuff that's too scary, gore is a no-no, and I'd prefer a happy or at least hopeful ending.
The "fear" should come more from the atmosphere and maybe the backstory of the house.
Here are some suggestions I don't want:
Rebecca–I already know what happens
Turn of the Screw–I've already read it (plus it's a short story, I'm looking for a novel)
House of Leaves–I tried to read it, but I couldn't handle the formatting.
