I've read a lot of books in the last 18 months and I've started to run out of ideas. I listed some books I loved, some I liked, and some I didn't like. Any suggestions would be great. It can be a standalone novel or a series!

    My favorite books are:

    • The Hobbit
    • Shogun
    • A Gentleman in Moscow
    • The Secret History
    • Kite Runner
    • Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas

    Books I thought were good:

    • Mistborn Trilogy
    • Crime and Punishment
    • East of Eden
    • To Kill a Mockingbird
    • Jurassic Park
    • Thrawn Trilogy

    Books I didn't like:

    1. I will always suggest Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman – to absolutely anyone and everyone.

Also Jaws by Peter Benchley – even if you’ve seen the film, the book is just as good if not better.

    2. The Baroque Cycle by Neal Stephenson (first is Quicksilver)

      Pillars of the Earth

      Wolf Hall

      Count of Monte Cristo

      Prince of Tides

    3. I finished A Gentleman in Moscow, loved it, and immediately felt I needed to start Anna Karenina! Almost halfway through now, and really enjoying it.

    4. Glad to find somebody else who actually read A Gentleman in Moscow — I really loved that book. Of course, i loved Blood Meridian too (I’m with you on Dune, though — I’ve started the first book three times and it’s never gonna happen.)

Some recent stuff that has really grabbed me:

I started reading Percival Everett a couple years ago and haven’t found a dud yet. His new one James is brilliant, but I strongly recommend reading (or re-reading) Huckleberry Finn prior. But all of his books are great (The Trees is probably my fave).

Benjamin Labatut – When We Cease to Understand the World and The MANIAC (These are half novel, half biography. Even if you’re not a math and physics person, they are both incredible.)

You may well enjoy The Name of the Wind, but it’s worth noting that the series isn’t finished yet.
