Looking for a series, preferably 3-8 books long. I really like to connect with characters and care what happens to them, more important than exciting or suspenseful plot. Preferably not complex fantasy, and I don't enjoy comedy in my books (I have tried Terry Pratchett many times and can't get into it).

I loved the Pillars of the Earth and Century series.

I'm a Harry Potter fanatic but mostly because of the characters. I can take or leave the magic.

Just finished the first book in the Emperor series by Iggulden and did not like it.

    Some five-star standalone books:

    • A Gentleman of Moscow and Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles

    -One Hundred Years of Solitude

    -Bel Canto (Ann Patchett)

I am also open to standalone books but would prefer something epic that will last me a long time without dragging on.

    Thank you!

The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells has super relatable characters. It’s in a future high tech setting, but the setting is eerily like our own in ways that make it relatable (to me at least).

If it’s not too fantasy for you, I would really recommend the Heartstriker series by Rachel Aaron, starting with “Nice Dragons Finish Last”. It does have plenty of worldbuilding, but the characters are very fun and relatable.

Sorry I only have speculative recs. I’m an SFF nerd.

    2. Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O’Brian. Historical fiction. Wooden Ships. Iron Men. Napoleonic Wars. Wonderful series.

Vorkosigan series by Lois McMaster Bujold. Science fiction. This is what good well written science fiction set in a universe that you’d want to be in looks like, as opposed to Dune…
