I’ve read some novels (predominantly mystery/thriller) which have featured domestic violence/abusive relationships. Whilst they’ve been engrossing/engaging – they have felt a little exploitative – I appreciate in any novel featuring these kind of relationships you’ll almost always be rooting for the protagonist to escape, but I’d like to read a much more nuanced and in-depth take.
In a similar vain, wouldn’t object to non-fiction recommendations on this also.
I hope I’ve made it clear above but a small disclaimer that of course I don’t find those types of relationships trashy – this is a learning opportunity for me.
