I recently finished The Night Circus and adored it. I found it super thought provoking and I loved the setting, the writing, and the non-linear structure. Definitely a new favorite of mine. However, I do agree with the critiques that the plot was somewhat lacking, the characters needed to be more fleshed out, and that the way it was marketed was way off. (If you aren't familiar with The Night Circus, basically the back of the book makes it sound like we're about to read a story about an epic love story set during an epic competition where two star crossed lovers are rivals and while there is a love story in there, the story is largely about the whimsical vibes of the circus itself and how it affects everyone's life).

So I am looking for recs that are similar to The Night Circus but have more fleshed out characters (perhaps a rivalry or a competition with more angst than TNC), more dramatic plot, but also cozy, atmospheric vibes. I am not opposed to any genre.

Please keep in mind: I am not a fan of the whole *it was all a dream!* or *it was all in their head* trope.

I would recommend the Caraval series. I really enjoyed it. Although I think there’s a new book in the series out now, Spectacular, that I have to read yet.
