Historical novels tend to go on…and on…so I thought I would start up this thread.
Note I will keep adding to it as I find novels in this category.
I just read a great historical novel about Mary, Queen of Scots,"The Tower" by Flora Carr.
It's set in Lochleven Castle (Wikipedia it), where Mary was imprisoned by rebel Scottish lords and forced to abdicate in 1567 from the Scottish throne.
It's Mary, two ordinary servants, and one of her ladies-in-waiting living in close quarters. It's a tower in Lochleven Castle, thus the title.
The character development is fantastic-we learn a great deal about Mary, but also the women who live with her (who are all based on real women), and it is as claustrophobic as a prison novel should be.
I've read about the Tudors, fact and historical fiction, since I was in middle school. Technically she's a Stuart, but Mary was the granddaughter of Henry VIII's sister Margaret Tudor, thus her claim to the English throne.
This book makes a strong showing in that very popular niche of historical fiction, Tudor history.
