As part of an autodidactic endeavoer to learn German I read books and listen to audio books translated from English into German. Given the complexity of the German language, the books that work best are ones that are fairly simply written. Problem is, I am an avid reader (from Dostoevsky to Sally Rooney, James Joyce to Haruki Murakami, Thomas Mann to Elena Ferrante, and I also read history, science, and other non-fiction.) I find reading most Young Adult fiction boring. I'm not much into fantasy or science fiction. An example of books that worked well for me were the first couple of books in Lee Child's Jack Reacher series, which I found to be well written yet still had very simple sentences.
So, any suggestions for books that are written with simple language yet still engaging?
