Is Thoreau’s writing really confusing or is it just me?

English is not my native language. I picked up Thoreau to read in its original english language but I find the language particularly confusing. I had read several books before in english, Pearl Buck, some science fiction and specially science articles which I do all the time. I found Thoreau’s english very har dto understand, though. Is it because it’s an english book from the 19th century and I’m not used to read, and so it’s hard for anyone or is my reading that’s just not used to this kind of writing, but any english speaker would be able to read it?
