hello,
i (28f) have been looking for a fictional book that reflects my life experience
a lot of older posts suggest books that revolve around “difficult” mother daughter relationships, neglect due to addiction, or overt abuse and i don’t relate to those
my mother has been emotional distant since middle school. she raised me, paid for me, forced me to go to church, but she doesn’t talk to me. i hardly know her. after i tried telling her the distance bothers me and that i’m an atheist she blew up on me and never spoke to me again.
please suggest a fictional book where the main character deals with alienation and emotional neglect from a parent for no apparent reason (preferably an adult)
thank you!

The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers. Has various characters dealing with loneliness and alienation, one of the central characters deals with feelings of isolation within her family though it’s more about her own internal struggles than direct abandonment.
Beloved by Toni Morrison. Gets into the effects of trauma and emotional neglect, particularly in a mother-daughter relationship, though it’s set against the backdrop of historical trauma and slavery.
