Unsurprisingly, I have seen a lot of criticism of #BookTok and its tendency towards smut, terrible relationships as romance, and generally making reading a trend. However, I did not expect to see people griping about those who listen to audiobooks at 2x speed (or any speed over 1.0).
On one hand, I know there are some people on social media who go to ridiculous lengths purely so they can say they’ve read hundreds of books each year. I’ve seen a few people admit to skimming every book they read, or skipping basically everything but the dialogue, though I’m sure it’s not the most prevalent practice (at least I hope). Maybe some people associate faster audiobooks with these types of try-hard behaviors. On the other hand, audiobooks are too damn slow. Aside from those who are hearing impaired, I don’t know how anyone can listen to a book that isn’t on 2x speed.
Has anyone else seen people express genuine disdain for this “issue”? I know the internet is a breeding ground for unnecessary hate, but this critique still kind of shocked me. Please tell me this is a unique experience and not another weird metric for judging others.
