So l, some of my favorite books to read in the past have been those that reflect on and describe what needs to change in our society. I haven’t read much that’s recent but my favorite writer in this category would be Christopher Lasch. I’ve also read a lot of g. I. Chesterton. What I appreciated about them was the fact that they saw the absurdity, contradictions, and folly of both liberals and conservatives and neither said our way out of this mess (from their respective times) was more capitalism or the culture of selfishness and narcissism it creates. I would definitely appreciate any recommendations that bring similar perspectives to a critical understanding of our current world.

Check out Jonathon Haidt. He has some great books that seem to fit what you’re looking for. His most recent is Anxious Generation. Great writer and very interesting commentary.
